The WordPress AI team just released version 0.1.0 of the AI Experiments Plugin on November 27, 2025. At this point, it’s more of a WordPress testing ground for AI features that might eventually become part of WordPress core. If you’ve been wondering how AI will fit into WordPress, this plugin offers the first real answer.
What Is the AI Experiments Plugin?
The AI Experiments Plugin is an official WordPress plugin that lets you test AI-powered features right inside your WordPress editor and admin area. It’s experimental, which means features might change or break, but it gives agencies and developers a hands-on look at where WordPress is heading with AI.
The first version includes one working feature: automatic title generation for posts and pages. More features are expected to come soon, including excerpt generation, image creation, and automatic alt text for images.
How Does It Work?
The plugin is built on WordPress’s new AI infrastructure that’s designed to work with multiple AI providers. You connect your own AI service by adding an API key from providers like OpenAI, Claude, or Google’s Gemini. The underlying architecture supports flexibility in provider choice, though the focus of this early release is on demonstrating how the technology works rather than offering extensive provider management features.
AI Experiments Plugin is also an opt-in tool. In other words, nothing happens automatically. You enable the experiments you want to try, and everything else stays off.
What Can You Do With It Right Now?

Version 0.1.0 includes one experiment: Title Generation. When you’re writing a post or page, you can ask the AI to suggest alternative titles. It’s useful when you’re stuck on headlines or want options that might work better for SEO or reader engagement.
That’s it for now. But the plugin is designed to add more experiments quickly.
What’s Coming Next?
The WordPress AI team has outlined several features they’re working on:
- Excerpt Generation: AI-written summaries of your content;
- Image Generation: Create images directly in WordPress;
- Alt Text Generation: Automatic accessibility descriptions for images;
- Abilities Explorer: A tool to see what WordPress capabilities are available to AI on your site;
- AI Playground: A space to test prompts and see how different AI models respond.
Should Your Agency Install This Plugin?
Here’s our take: install it on a development or staging site, not on client sites.
It’s worth exploring if you:
- Build custom WordPress solutions and want to understand the new AI APIs;
- Have clients asking about AI features and want concrete examples to discuss;
- Stay ahead of WordPress development trends;
- Want to give feedback that might shape how AI works in WordPress.
How to Get Started

Source: WordPress
The plugin was available on GitHub until now, but it got approval for the WordPress.org plugin directory too just a couple of days ago. So you’ll no longer need to set it up manually.
Once installed, you’ll need an API key from an AI provider. The plugin works with OpenAI, Anthropic’s Claude, Google’s Gemini, and other services. Each provider has different pricing, so we recommend checking their rates before connecting.
After connecting your AI service, you can enable the Title Generation experiment in the plugin settings. Then create or edit a post, and you’ll see the option to generate title suggestions.

Our Take at WLA
At White Label Agency, we see this plugin as WordPress catching up with the AI industry. It’s clear that they’re not rushing to add flashy features yet. Instead, they’re building infrastructure first, testing with real users, and creating systems that different developers can extend.
We think that’s the right approach.
“We all know that WordPress runs half of the Internet. So it makes sense that they are not rushing to implement AI features yet. If something goes wrong, it can break many things. It seems like they are taking Apple’s approach, being more strategic about how they can integrate AI into their systems. I think it would be a safe bet to say that both of these companies will eventually manage to incorporate AI features in the best way possible,” says Natalia, our Head of Production.
We’re watching this development closely. If AI features do make it into WordPress core, we want to understand how they work and how they might help the agencies we work with serve their clients better. For now, the AI Experiments Plugin is exactly what its name suggests: an experiment. But it’s an experiment worth following.
