WordPress 4.5 is Here

WordPress news

Want to see what your WordPress site looks like beyond your desktop screen — on mobile? On tablet? Now you can see how your site looks on any device with WordPress’ newly updated preview function. And that’s just one of many fantastic updates for the content management platform, which just released Version 4.5 this week.

In fact, the most recent update for WordPress is so special, it even has its own name — “Coleman.” Version 4.5 is named after jazz musician Coleman Hawkins, who made the saxophone one of the quintessential jazz instruments. Like its namesake, WordPress’ Coleman is smooth, helping to streamline workflow. That should be music to your ears.

Coleman is now available for download or update in your WordPress dashboard.

Here’s what’s new in Coleman (Version 4.5):

  • Easy linking
It’s easier than ever to link to other sites — an article, an image, a video — with Coleman. Now you can inline link without having to separately click the link button on your editing panel. Instead, a box below your hypertext pops up, allowing you to continue on in your writing groove, while simultaneously linking. Fewer clicks, less hassle.
  • Lines and Code
Want a formatting hack for horizontal lines so you don’t have to insert it separately? It’s here. Just do three dashes and hit return. Voila! Also, you can turn your text into code — just put single quotes and it will come out as <code>.
  • Multi-device Preview
It’s been a problem for a while that you can’t see what your WordPress site looks like on desktop, mobile, and tablet screens from one preview. With Coleman, that problem is solved. Check out all three views to make sure your site is just as pretty on your phone as it is on the computer screen.
  • Add your own logos
Branding is basically your website’s identity. Now your WordPress site can express its own unique identity, since Coleman supports custom logos. Go to the Site Identity section of your customizer and check out Twenty Sixteen and Twenty Fifteen. Get personalized!
  • Images auto-resize
No quality loss. Loads 50 percent faster. No downsides, just better images.
  • Selective Refresh
WordPress now lets you render parts of the preview without rewriting your PHP code in JavaScript.
  • Script Loader Improvements
New wp_add_inline_script() enables adding extra code to registered scripts. This will help support your script header/footer dependencies.
  • Embed Templates Updates
Embed templates are now divided into individual components. They can be directly overridden by themes, too. Use the template hierarchy.
  • Improvements to JavaScript Library
Now bundled: jQuery 1.12.3, jQuery Migrate 1.4.0, Backbone 1.2.3, and Underscore 1.8.3.
